Metabolic Monitoring and Cardiovascular Safety in Athletic Training: Toward an Integrated Surveillance Framework

Modern athletic training pursues performance through progressively higher cardiometabolic loads, which raises the question of how to monitor an athlete’s metabolic state while safeguarding cardiovascular health. This paper proposes an integrative framework linking metabolic monitoring with cardiac safety throughout the training process. Synthesising evidence from sports physiology, exercise recovery, sports cardiology, and related clinical fields, it treats lactate clearance kinetics, energy and adipokine metabolism, and redox status as complementary markers of training load and adaptation, and connects them to cardiac-risk stratification, screening, and return-to-sport decisions after illness. The framework is presented as a closed monitoring loop in which load generates measurable metabolic signals that inform risk assessment and subsequent load adjustment. The synthesis argues that combining metabolic surveillance with cardiovascular safeguards supports both performance optimisation and the prevention of maladaptation and adverse cardiac events in athletes
