Abstract

The notion of functional reserves offers a unifying lens for phenomena traditionally examined within separate disciplines. This paper synthesises evidence from sports science, physical rehabilitation, clinical medicine, and dermatology to argue that the development, restoration, and protection of the body’s functional reserves and regenerative capacity form a single conceptual continuum. Drawing on studies of high-intensity interval training, post-load recovery through deep-tissue massage, functional-exercise methodology, psychophysiological self-organisation in athletes, predictive modelling of cardiac complications, lower-urinary-tract dysfunction, neuromotor rehabilitation, severe respiratory infection, and skin regeneration, the study identifies shared mechanisms of adaptation, compensation, and recovery kinetics. An integrative framework is proposed in which reserves are expanded by training, depleted by load or pathology, and restored through targeted intervention. The synthesis underlines the value of cross-disciplinary transfer of assessment tools and rehabilitation principles for sports medicine, clinical practice, and health promotion.
