Abstract

Fraud remains a critical challenge in accounting and finance, leading to significant financial losses, regulatory penalties, and reputational damage. Traditional fraud detection methods often rely on centralized systems that are vulnerable to manipulation, inefficiencies, and delayed reporting. Blockchain technology, with its decentralized, immutable, and transparent nature, presents a transformative solution for fraud prevention in accounting and finance. This paper explores how blockchain can enhance security, transparency, and trust in financial transactions. By leveraging a distributed ledger, blockchain ensures that all financial records are cryptographically secured and time-stamped, making unauthorized alterations nearly impossible. Smart contracts further automate compliance and internal controls, reducing human intervention and the risk of fraud. Additionally, real-time auditing capabilities enabled by blockchain reduce the lag in fraud detection, allowing for swift corrective actions. Key applications of blockchain in fraud prevention include preventing financial statement fraud, improving anti-money laundering (AML) measures, and enhancing audit processes.
